What a demonically tangled web you've unravelled here! I believe Israel imprisoned Vanunu for attempting to replace opacity with transparency--a deterrence policy against whistleblowers!
Great episode. It's worth mentioning that the (southern) Prince Edward islands belong to South Africa. They were likely collaborating with Israel to provide a site in exchange for some knowhow.
I'd love to hear an episode on South Africa's nuclear history too from a good expert. There's fascinating range of topics Including the dismantled bombs (and possible reasons why), PBMR, the meanings of the isiZulu site names near Pretoria (and connections to famous poets), unusual enrichment strategies and experiments etc. I recently learned from a lady who worked there they also dabbled in laser enrichment.
I just listened to this episode, which was admirably politically neutral. I must salute you for not jumping on the not-antisemitic-just-antizionist bandwagon that seems to be so popular these days with the smart set.
For those who are not big on boring old history, the same sort of discussion was had in the early years of WWII. Most intellectuals and geopolitical types were opposed to joining the war against the Axis powers, for sound reasons. Of course, after America emerged victorious both morally and industrially, the clever commentariat suddenly had no recollection of opposing the war in the first place. Memory is a funny thing.
Another recent interview worth your time is a recent MacroVoices podcast episode with a fella named Yasir Arafat [I shit you not]. I wonder if his folks are disappointed that he didn’t follow in the footsteps of his namesake, but he sounds like a nice enough guy, and he’s a SMR entrepreneur. You might want to have him on your show.
Good article
Great stuff, Chris. The history of this part of the world is endlessly fascinating.
